Kawartha Lakes Commuter Challenge Prepare Now!

Kawartha Lakes Mums- Do You Commute?

THINK OUTSIDE THE CAR!
No need to rev your car engine, when you can make a new sound on your way to work with a bit of walk and roll.

For the seventh straight year, the 2012 Commuter Challenge returns to the City of Kawartha Lakes from June 3-9. During that week, local residents, families and workplaces are being asked to find ‘active’ and environmentally-friendly ways to get to work, school and other places.

Walking, cycling, running, jogging, inline skating and using public transit are all encouraged. Working from home and carpooling also count as part of the Challenge.
The Commuter Challenge is a nation-wide competition to see which community has the highest participation rate and covers the greatest distance using active and sustainable modes of transportation. As in past years, the City of Kawartha Lakes will be competing against other similar-sized communities across Canada.
Participating in the Commuter Challenge has many benefits for your health, the environment and your wallet,” says Lisa Kaldeway, Health Promoter with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “We encourage as many people, school communities and workplaces as possible to get involved, especially when civic pride is on the line.”
People and workplaces can register the activity or sustainable commute starting on June 3 by visiting www.commuterchallenge.ca . Results will be updated daily through the week to see which workplace and community have the highest percentage of commuters.
“If you have a long commute, there are still creative ways to help you go the distance,” Kaldeway says. “One idea is to find a location to park your vehicle a few kilometres from your destination, then cycle or walk the rest of the way.”
