Kawartha Lakes Mums - How Do You Love Your Brain?

March 9- 15, 2014 is Brain Awareness Week. The Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) is asking Ontarians to ‘show some love for their brains’.
This unique campaign leads off Brain Awareness Week, challenging people to think about what the brain does for us and then share their thoughts on Facebook and Twitter.
OBI is releasing a series of videos involving our five senses (taste, sight, smell, touch, sound), reminding us that every sense, and every moment we experience is because of our brain. ”Who we are, how we behave, how we love and laugh – the brain plays a very important role in these behaviours and in everything we experience, “said Donald Stuss, President & Scientific Director, OBI. ”Because our brains are the essence of who we are, we simply cannot put enough effort towards the study and treatment of brain disorders.”

More than one million Ontarians suffer from a brain disorder and 2.6 million will be affected in their lifetime. Brain disorders include a wide range of conditions and account for roughly one- third of total years lost to death and disability from all diseases in Ontario, more than the combined number for cancer and cardiovascular disease. However, the brain does not receive the attention it deserves.

Ontario is in a unique position to impact the lives of individuals with brain disorders. The province already has many of the assets necessary to make a difference: it boasts one of the highest concentrations of neuroscientists in the world, is consistently recognized for excellence in brain research and clinical care, and benefits from past investments in infrastructure and training. The challenge is for OBI to connect these strengths and position Ontario as a world leader in discovery, commercialization, and care.
