Howlers Corners is just a few kilometres north of Lindsay at 277 Kenrei Road.  Have you visited this play place with your dog yet?
Howlers Corners park is 3 acres in size and
has a large area of cut grass with benches, and a natural area with its own nature trails.
Kawartha Lakes tails have been wagging since the June 14, 2013 grand opening when dogs were unleashed in Howlers Corners, the first public off-leash dog park in the City of Kawartha Lakes when  the gates officially opened.

Kawartha Lakes Dog Park : Special Service Dog Area

Kawartha Lakes Howlers Corners Off Leash Dog Park features a separate area for small dogs and service dogs, with a double-gated calming area, which leads into both areas.

 “There has been great interest in the community for an off-leash park, and we are pleased to have a high quality facility close to town, in an incredible setting,” said Donna Villemaire, Kawartha Conservation Chair and City of Kawartha Lakes Councillor. “Many thanks to all of the sponsors, donors, and volunteers, including the Friends of Kawartha Conservation and John Howard Society, as well as staff at Kawartha Conservation, for making this project possible.” 

Special Small Dog Area

 Development of the site involved removing invasive Buckthorn trees and stumps, bringing in several loads of fill to grade the site, installing drainage ditches and culverts to carry excess water off the site, installing fencing, benches, bag stands and bins, and planting grass seed. Wow! That's a huge job! So who helped pay for all this?

Kawartha Lakes Dog Park Benefactors

Through the efforts of Friends of Kawartha Conservation and the John Howard Society of Kawartha Lakes & Haliburton, $7,500 was raised, and matched by the City of Kawartha Lakes through the 50/50 Community Capital Project Fund Program. Fundraising is still ongoing to help cover the total costs of building the park, as well as support the ongoing maintenance and addition of features, which will be considered in the future as uses of the park are established.  “It’s something we wanted to do for the community,” said Rob Messervey, Kawartha Conservation CAO. “Many people bring their dogs into the conservation area, but the law requires that they are kept on leash to protect sensitive natural features and the enjoyment of other visitors. We regularly hear that there is nowhere that allows dogs to exercise off-leash.” 

Kawartha Lakes Off Leash Dog Park : Hours

Howlers Corners is open every day from 7 am to 9 pm  or 8 am to 6 pm from November to April. Dog owners need to bring their own water, and remember to bring baggies and pick up after their dogs. Forgot your baggie? No problem! Baggies will be available if owners forget them. All of the rules of the run are posted at the park, and enforcement staff will be on site periodically to ensure visitors are following them

 “The community has been very supportive of this project, and I think that as more people come out to Howlers Corners, that support will continue to grow,” said Kathleen Cooper, Friends of Kawartha Conservation President. “It will also be just a lot of fun for both dogs and people to socialize.”
