City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library is pleased to announce the launch of a Seed Lending Library as the result of a community partnership. The Seed Lending Library is a free community project which encourages residents to grow their own vegetables and fruits, save the seed and then share the seeds with others. The Seed Library will be located at the Bobcaygeon Library, the Kirkfield Library and the Lindsay Library.

How Does A Seed Lending Library Program Work?

At the Seed Library, patrons can check out seeds for free. They then grow the vegetables and fruits, harvest the new seeds, and "return" some of these seeds so the library can "lend" them out to others. As well as seeds and seedlings, patrons will receive handouts on growing the seeds and information on how to collect and save seed. To initiate this service the Library will be offering a variety of seeds which are easy to grow and easy to collect, as well as tomato and pepper seedlings, while quantities last. The seeds were purchased from Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse with a donation from the Friends of the Kirkfield Library. Seeds were selected and packaged by the Lindsay & District Master Gardeners.

When Can We Start Borrowing from the Seed Lending Library?

Information sessions have been scheduled to provide more information and will be held on at the Bobcaygeon Library (705 738-2088) on Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 pm, at the Lindsay Library (705 324-5632) on Saturday, May 10 at 11 am and Thursday, May 22 at 6:30 pm and at the Kirkfield Library (705 438-3331) on Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 am. Later in the growing season more presentations about seed collecting will be held.

Why a Seed Lending Library Program?

We hope you learn a lot as you experience the joys of gardening and seed saving. As you grow as a gardener and experience success in your garden, please consider bringing some seeds back to share the fruits of your labours with the Seed Library community. Please feel free to try growing any seed that interests you. We all learn by trying new things.

The Library is pleased to partner with the Lindsay & District Master Gardeners, the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society, the Friends of the Kirkfield Library, Fleming College, Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition, Lindsay Community Garden, Healthy Communities and Plant a Row, Grow a Row.
