Hearing Impaired? Kawartha Lakes Fire and Rescue Offers Sightline to Safety Program!

Kawartha Lakes has many people with hearing impairments, especially since we have more seniors per capita than many other Ontario. Kawartha Lakes Fire & Rescue (KLF&R) and the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) have teamed up to encourage and promote good fire safety practice for people that are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing. What is Sightline to Safety about?
Glad you asked!

Kawartha Lakes Sightline to Safety Program

Kawartha Lakes ‘Sightline to Safety’ joint campaign between Kawartha Lakes Fire & Rescue (KLF&R) and the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) was announced as part of Fire Prevention Week October 5 to 11. ‘Sightline to Safety’ is a voluntary registration for people that are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing to confidentially register with Emergency Services  such as fire rescue, police, and ambulance.

Kawartha Lakes Sightline to Safety Program - Benefits

Kawartha Lakes Sightline to Safety Program benefits people in two ways:

  • First, if a 911 call is made from a registered residence, the dispatch can alert emergency services that they are responding to a residence with someone that is deaf, deafened or hard of hearing. This will provide a more effective and efficient response to whatever the emergency.
  • Secondly,  registering in Kawartha Lakes Sightline to Safety Program ensures a Fire Prevention Inspector will attend the residence to discuss fire safety. An effective home escape plan can be created along with suggesting different alerting devices designed to alert deaf, deafened or hard of hearing people to react in the event of a fire through visual, audible and tactile notification.
Many people cannot hear their smoke alarm but with simple planning lives can be saved.
“This is not the first time the Kawartha Lakes Fire Service and the Canadian Hearing Society have teamed up to support the community,” said Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Prevention Officer Brian McCuaig. “In the past we held a trade show specifically targeted to fire safety and products available to aid the community.”
This year Fire Prevention Week ran from October 5 to 11 and the 2014 theme was Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.
