BREAST FOR BABY

- Upcoming Class Provides Support for New Parents Who Want to Breastfeed Their Babies -

(LINDSAY) – Expecting? Mark February 22 on your calendar! Give your newborn the ‘breast’ start to life.

New FREE Breastfeeding Class Offers Support and Tips

A free class on the fourth Wednesday of February can provide support and encouragement to mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is organizing a free Preparation for Breastfeeding Class on Wednesday, February 22, from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at its office in Lindsay (108 Angeline St. S.). To register for the class, call the Health Unit at (705) 324-3569, ext. 263.

The class will provide information, tips and support on breastfeeding for first-time parents and those families expecting a second or third child.

Breast Feeding Prevents Diseases

“Breastfeeding your baby is one of the best decisions you can make as a parent,” says Tracey Westlake, a Family Health Nurse with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Breastfeeding is strongly encouraged because of the many benefits it provides your baby.”

Studies show breast milk is best for babies, as it helps to reduce the risk of developing diabetes, asthma, ear and upper respiratory infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Breast milk also contains valuable antibodies that help prevent disease and may reduce the risk of babies developing allergies.

Health Canada recommends women exclusively breastfeed their infants for the first six months of life, as breast milk is the best food for optimal growth. At six months of age, infants can continue to breastfeed while being introduced to nutrient-rich solid foods, particularly ones that contain iron. Health experts say young children can be breastfed up to two years of age and beyond.

Share Your Breastfeeding Tips and Frustrations

“We know breastfeeding is good for the baby and mother, but we also realize there can be challenges,” Westlake adds. “This breastfeeding class can help moms make an easier adjustment to nursing their babies. There is also an opportunity to share experiences and advice with other parents who might be encountering the same challenges.”
