The Peterborough Police Service is reminding gamers to be aware, alert, respectful and most of all, safe, when playing the global craze Pokémon Go.The augmented-reality mobile game, that allows players with their cellphojnes to travel between the real world and the virtual world in search of digital monsters with names like Rattata and Venusaur, is being played in our area. While using virtual Pokéballs to “capture” these monsters to gain more points and get bumped up to the next level, there are reports from other countries of players taking unnecessary risks that can cause injury to themselves or others.
Some Pokémon are digital water-type critters found near lakes and rivers while others might be bug-type creatures found more in the countryside or forests while other monsters like more urban settings. The game’s loading screen cautions players to pay attention to their surroundings as they hunt for the creatures in their community.
We urge people to use common sense when playing the game and keep in mind the following:
- Do not trespass or wander onto private property.
- Do not play and drive.
- Whether on foot, car or bicycle watch where you’re going and watch for others.
- Be alert and aware of your surroundings if searching more remote locations.
- If your child wants to play, require that they head out with a group of friends. Have your child tell you where they are going, who they are going with and when they will be back.
- Use caution near bodies of water, train tracks, abandoned buildings, construction sites or other potentially dangerous locations.
