Does your family observe any New Year's traditions?

Here are my New Year's memories.

Celebrating New Year's with Dad

Growing up, our New Year's usually started at midnight with my father rushing home from whatever party he was at and arming us with pots, pans and wooden spoons to make a racket on the back porch.
You might think it odd for a man to rush home from a New Years Eve Dance to spend midnight with his children, but that's the kind of man our dad was -family centered.

Mum, on the other hand, was none too pleased with the dents in her frying pans and the broken wooden spoons.

Yet, dad humoured her and persuaded her that pancakes made in a misshapen pan would be just as delicious as a flat pan.

Our father was also keenly interested in old folklore and traditions of New Years -teaching us about cleaning house before New Years, the important black-haired first-footer who would need to bring coal and salt before any one else entered our home and opening all the doors and windows to let the old year out and the new year in.

Are any of these traditions familiar to your family?

New Year's Typical Kawartha Lakes Celebrations

New Year's for most people in Kawartha Lakes, combines traditions of other countries.
Many adults attend dances and parties where toasts are made with champagne at midnight and people sing Singing Auld Lang Syne.
Making New Year's resolutions is another common tradition as is the New Year's Day Mayor's Levee or open house.
