Kawartha Lakes Kids Issue Safety Advisory!

Two grade 6 students, chosen from over 100 entries,Junior Fire Chief for a Day in Kawartha Lakes.  Their selection was based on a 50 word essay on the importance of having Two Ways Out of every room in a fire emergency. Appriately,the two Junior Chiefs for a Day issued  the following Safety advisory.:


The Junior Fire Chiefs for a Day would like to tell everyone to practice their escape plan with the family and have a safe, familiar, meeting place outside the home for everyone to assemble.

They would also like to remind the public to have working smoke alarms on every level of the home, to check them monthly to ensure they are working, and replace batteries at least once a year

Junior Fire Chiefs for the Day for 2012 were:

Lindsay Library Imagine Programs Pack Fun!

August Lindsay Library Programs

 
Entertaining and educational programs with the theme “Imagine” continue during the month of August at the Lindsay branch of the City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library.
 

Imagination Station, for children up to age 3 years, continues every Tuesday morning at 10:30 am.  Activities are geared toward children up to 3 years of age but everyone is welcome.  Registration is not required – drop in any Tuesday. 
 
Featured Passport to Fun events on Wednesdays at 2 pm includes the following. Please be sure to register in advance.  
August 1 – “Who is in the Wardrobe”
August 8 – “The Centre  for the Conservation of Specialized Species”
August 15 – “Lakeland Storytellers”
Augusts 22 – “Fantasy Food”
August 28 – “Enchanted Garden”
 
Enjoy a different activity each week at Imagine Crafts on Thursdays at 2 pm.  Boys and girls age 7 years and up are asked to register in advance as space is limited.
 
Fantasy Tales, for children age 4 – 7 years, continues on Friday mornings at 10:30 am.  Lots of fun with stories, games, activities and crafts.  Registration is not required.
 
Read to the Dogs with St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs Jack and Rocky -   Thursday, August 9 between 6:30 and 7:30 pm and Saturday, August 25 between 10:30 am and 12 noon.   Book your 15 minute session in advance.

Wild Parsnip Burns Watch Out!

Wild Parsnip,often mistaken for Giant Hogweed can cause severe skin irritation. OMAFRA - Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food recently issued an alert to warn farm workers that Wild Parsnip is in bloom.

it is very important that everyone that enters a field, an orchard or a vineyard be able to identify it, because you definitely do not want to touch this weed.

Why Wild Turnip is Dangerous

According to the online Wild turnip OMAFRA fact sheet:

Similar to giant hogweed, wild parsnip contains furocoumarins which can cause severe skin dermatitis, when activated by sunlight. The severity of dermatitis is largely proportional to the amount of contact made between skin and the vegetative material (i.e stems, leaves) of the plant. The 'burn' reaction usually appears a day or two after exposure, and only in places touched by the sap and exposed to the sun. In mild cases, affected skin turns red and feels like a sunburn. In more typical cases, skin reddens, often hurts and forms large blisters. Unlike blisters caused by poison ivy, wild parsnip blisters do not spread.
