12 Days of Christmas - December 27 Turtle Doves |
Here's what we discovered!
European Turtle Doves
European Turtle Doves Ancient Symbol of Love |
European Turtle Doves have become known as the symbol of undying love for a variety of reasons. The bird which forms strong bond pairs, has a plaintive mournful turr-turr cry. A native of Africa, the turtle doves are one of the last birds to migrate north in April to Europe. Turtle doves, named for their cry were even mentioned in the ancient love poem, The Song of Songs.
This member of the pigeon family, has decreased in numbers by 62% in recent years, due partly to their being shot in Mediterranean countries during their migration, and also changes in farming methods which have decreased the seed available for them to eat.
Annual Christmas Bird Counts
This is the 115th year of the North American Audubon traditional Christmas Bird Count Each year between December 14 and January 5, the Christmas Bird Count is carried out in more than 1800 communities across Canada, the United States and Latin America.
What happens at a bird count?
Each group participating attempts to count all the birds within a 24 km diameter circle on the selected day. And of course, at the end of this day there is the great get-together and camaraderie that is available at the pot-luck tally. There are two Kawartha Lakes Bird Counts taking place this year, one in Fenelon Falls co-ordinated by Kawartha Field Naturalists, and the other at the world-renowned Carden Alvar.
