Kawartha Lakes Heat Warning - Keep Cool Tips!

Kawartha Lakes Mums Asks: Are You Keeping Cool?

City of Kawartha Lakes just issued a news release in response to the Environment Canada Heat Warning for our area for August 4 and 5, 2016.
Although some people in City of Kawartha Lakes have access to the facilities recommended for keeping cool, by the local government, there are many people in our rural area who are not so fortunate. In addition, in other communities when a heat warning is issued, some public air conditioned buildings are designated as cooling centres and opened to the public 24-7. This is not the case in City of Kawartha Lakes.
This post has some keeping cool tips from our local health unit, as well as links to past keeping cool posts.
If you can get to one of the facilities listed when it is open, please check and see if there are neighbours who might be grateful for a lift to get out of the heat as well.
In addition to the places listed by City of Kawartha Lakes below, many local churches are air conditioned.
See this list of Kawartha Lakes Church telephone numbers and call them to check for extended hours.
Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay is open 24-7 and would probably prefer you avoid heat stroke by visiting them, than visiting them on a stretcher via ambulance.

Carol Chan, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, HKPR District Health Unit offers a few helpful tips to help us keep cool.

Beat the Heat Health Unit Tips

The first hot and humid weather to hit the region in 2016 is bringing a reminder for local residents to keep their cool. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is advising people to beat the heat this weekend, as a warm and humid air mass settles into southern Ontario for the next few days.

Why No Heat Advisory This Weekend?

While the weather will be warm this weekend, the conditions do not meet the criteria for a Heat Warning to be issued. When those conditions are reached any time this summer, the Health Unit will issue such a Heat Warning. A Heat Warning is issued when the maximum day time temperature is expected to be greater or equal to 31°C and the night time temperature is greater or equal to 20°C or the humidex is greater or equal to 40°C for two consecutive days.
The Health Unit notes that hot weather conditions pose a health risk when people are not used to the heat. Everyone is at risk from heat, especially older adults, infants and young children, and people with chronic illnesses.

How Can Kawartha Lakes Folks Beat the Heat?

To beat the heat, the Health Unit advises local residents to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid outdoor sports activities or moderately intense physical activity
  • Check-in with vulnerable family, friends, acquaintances, clients -
  • Drink lots of water and natural fruit juices even if you don’t feel very thirsty
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and cola
  • Avoid going out in the sun or heat when possible. If outside, stay in the shade and plan to go out early in the morning or evening when it is cooler.
  • Go to air conditioned facilities (shopping malls, libraries, community centres or a friend’s)
  • Keep shades, drapes, and blinds closed on the sunny side of your home, but keep windows slightly open - if you do not have air conditioning – use fans
  • Keep lights off or turned down low
  • Wear loose fitting, light clothing and a wide brimmed hat
  • Take a cool bath or shower periodically or cool down with cool, wet towels
  • Avoid heavy meals and using your oven.

Police Puzzle Over Recent Kawartha Lakes Death

Kawartha Lakes Woman Dies - Police Seek Clues!

Jennifer Platt,of 14 Holton Street Lindsay, became like a sister to me when my daughter and I rented her basement for a year and a half. A quiet cheerful woman who worked hard to overcome her hearing impairment, she was an active volunteer with several churches including the Salvation Army and Cameron Community Church.
Who on earth would want to do any arm to this gentle soul?
While City of Kawartha Lakes Police made an arrest Friday, they are still seeking clues. Could you help solve this crime?

Police Charge Robert Edward Jarvis with Death of Jennifer Platt!

Friday March 24,2016. Police charged Robert Edward Jarvis ,49, with 1st degree murder in the death of a dear friend, Jennifer Platt.
My mind is still reeling.
I  last saw Jennifer in the autumn at Omemee Christian Outreach at that time she seemed quite happy, but we didn't have much time to chat.
One question at the forefront of my mind is who on earth is Robert Edward Jarvis?
I  don't recall her ever mentioning the name, so he must have been a fairly recent aquaintance.
Do you know who Robert Edward Jarvis is?
Do you know anything about this case?
The police would appreciate any information you might be able to offer to piece this puzzle together.
Please call the dedicated tip line. The tips can be reported at 705.324.6307 ext544. If you wish to provide information regarding this investigation but would like to remain anonymous you can contact Crimestoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS(8477), or via their website at www.khcs.ca.
