It doesn't have to be that way...
Discover how you can still have fun during the Christmas season!
Yes, the holiday season is a busy time for all of us, however, if we can remember to take time to inject some fun while getting things done, we can enjoy the season so much more!
As the Christmas season approaches many of us feel overwhelmed thinking about all that needs to be done.
As if our lives weren't already busy enough, we've now got to mail out cards, shop, decorate, cook, go to parties, school activities etc.
Arrrrgggghhh!
It's no wonder we feel so stressed out and we don't seem to have much fun.
Isn't Christmas supposed to be a joyful time?
Aren't we supposed to have time to spend with our loved ones?
Unfortunately, instead we feel run ragged and our only thought is,
"I'll be glad when this holiday season is over with!"
What if there was a way you could manage to have a little fun during the holidays while still getting all the things on your list  done?
You know that old saying "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy"?

Have fun along the way?
How can you have fun along the way?

1. De-Stress Christmas by Delegating. The first thing you should remember is you don't have to do everything yourself. There are ways you can enlist the help of others without making them feel like they're working.

  • Guests - You may find many of your guests prefer to have something to do when they come for the holidays besides just sitting around watching TV. There are some things that even kids can help out with and have some fun in the process.
  • Gather the family around and brainstorm some decorating ideas.
  • A young driver with a new license is often glad to drive whenever they can, so if you have one in your household, take advantage of him or her, and let them run some errands for you. No young driver in your family? Try the next door neighbour. Many young drivers are happy to have the gas money!
  • Many young people today have become couch potatoes due to TV and video games, get them up off the couch and let them pitch in and lend you a hand!

2.Include Family Fun on Your List. When making your list of things to do,  be sure to include some fun activities that include family and friends. Remember sharing and companionship is what the Christmas season is all about, so allow yourself an opportunity to spend some quality fun time with those who matter the most to you.

3. Don't Reinvent the Wheel. There's no need to feel embarrassed in taking some good advice from other sources, because no one knows everything. We keep learning new things all our lives.

Here is the press release from Kawartha Lakes Library about their September autumn vegetable garden sessions.

Kawartha Lakes Library presents Fall in the Vegetable Garden

Kawartha Lakes Library is pleased to partner with the Lindsay & District Master Gardeners as they present “Fall in the Vegetable Garden”. This workshop will be held at the Lindsay Branch Library on Saturday September 10 and Saturday September 17 (same presentation on both days) from 10:15am to 11:30am.
Kawartha Lakes Small Space No Space Garden Solutions
Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc. is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to helping home gardeners. Master Gardeners (MGs) in the Province of Ontario are experienced gardeners who have studied horticulture extensively and continue to upgrade their skills through technical training. With this training and continuing education, Master Gardeners provide expert horticultural advice to the general public.
This workshop is intended for gardening novices, but would be a useful refresher for more experienced gardeners and an opportunity for participants to ask all their gardening questions. The workshop will cover the basics including harvesting and storing herbs and vegetables, fall garden clean-up, soil improvement for next spring and fall planting of garlic and spinach.
Preregistration is encouraged. Call 705-324-5632 or drop in to the Lindsay Branch Library. The first 30 registrants for each workshop will receive 2 garlic bulbs and a spinach seed packet. You must be present at the workshop to receive your free gift.
Support for these presentations comes from HKPR Health Unit’s Healthy Communities Fund and Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition.

Carol Chan, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, HKPR District Health Unit offers a few helpful tips to help us keep cool.

Beat the Heat Health Unit Tips

The first hot and humid weather to hit the region in 2016 is bringing a reminder for local residents to keep their cool. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is advising people to beat the heat this weekend, as a warm and humid air mass settles into southern Ontario for the next few days.

Why No Heat Advisory This Weekend?

While the weather will be warm this weekend, the conditions do not meet the criteria for a Heat Warning to be issued. When those conditions are reached any time this summer, the Health Unit will issue such a Heat Warning. A Heat Warning is issued when the maximum day time temperature is expected to be greater or equal to 31°C and the night time temperature is greater or equal to 20°C or the humidex is greater or equal to 40°C for two consecutive days.
The Health Unit notes that hot weather conditions pose a health risk when people are not used to the heat. Everyone is at risk from heat, especially older adults, infants and young children, and people with chronic illnesses.

How Can Kawartha Lakes Folks Beat the Heat?

To beat the heat, the Health Unit advises local residents to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid outdoor sports activities or moderately intense physical activity
  • Check-in with vulnerable family, friends, acquaintances, clients -
  • Drink lots of water and natural fruit juices even if you don’t feel very thirsty
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and cola
  • Avoid going out in the sun or heat when possible. If outside, stay in the shade and plan to go out early in the morning or evening when it is cooler.
  • Go to air conditioned facilities (shopping malls, libraries, community centres or a friend’s)
  • Keep shades, drapes, and blinds closed on the sunny side of your home, but keep windows slightly open - if you do not have air conditioning – use fans
  • Keep lights off or turned down low
  • Wear loose fitting, light clothing and a wide brimmed hat
  • Take a cool bath or shower periodically or cool down with cool, wet towels
  • Avoid heavy meals and using your oven.
For more information on coping with hot weather, visit the Health Unit’s website at the link in related links at http://www.hkpr.on.ca/InfoSet/Environments/HotWeather.aspx
