Getting Ontario Eye Care Coverage:
OHIP : Ontario Health Insurance Plan covers an eye examination once a year for persons under 20 or 65 and over. OHIP also covers a major eye exam once every 12 months for persons aged 20 - 64 who have medical conditions requiring regular eye examinations such as diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, cataract, retinal disease, amblyopia, visual field defects, corneal disease, strabismus. Your family physician can also refer you for an eye exam. In addition people on income assistance through the Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works or the Family Benefits Program receive coverage for routine eye examinations once every two years.Gift of Sight Program: The Gift of Sight Program is available in many Ontario communities, but we do not know if it is available in City of Kawartha Lakes. This program provides prescription eyewear to low-income working individuals/families NOT on social assistance, ODSP, or having benefit plans through Indian Affairs, Veteran Affairs or personal plans in need of glasses. Application is usually made through your local Community Care office.
Blue Cross: If you are self-employed, or an employer looking for group benefits, Blue Cross offers some vision care, and eye exam benefits. See Blue Cross Heath Plans for Details.
