Today, Maundy Thursday is hitting global headlines, with a new historic action by the Pope in Rome.We grew up hearing about Maundy Thursday, but did not know much about it. What is Maundy Thursday?
Maundy Thursday, Holy Thursday,Covenant Thursday, Great and Holy Thursday, Sheer Thursday or Thursday of Mysteries is Christian holy day, falling on the Thursday before Good Friday. It commemorates the actions of Jesus performed in 13:1–17, and the final Passover Meal Jesus shared with His disciples. Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the three holy Easter Days- commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ; this period beginning at sunset on Thursday includes Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and ends at sunset on Easter.

In John, Jesus washes the feet of His followers, a task usually done by a servant, and tells them to do likewise for others. For some, the foot washing, has been replaced by being of service to others in other ways. Today in Rome, newly elected Pope Francis will wash the feet of inmates at a juvenile detention center near Rome Pope. This is a very historical change, as itbis the first time the symbolic foot washing has been done outside the Basilica, and is representative of the Pope's emphasis on outreach.Local Maundy Thursday Observances
